A detail from the general arrangement drawing for 'Abigail', a high performance 15" gauge 2-8-0T locomotive design created to meet the demanding operating requirements of the Bure Valley Railway at lowest total cost of ownership. This modern superheated design will be capable of developing 104.4 KW (140 hp) at the drawbar at the maximum line speed of 20 mph over the undulating nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham in North Norfolk. Locomotive Design

The design of steam locomotives is at the heart of our business and we can undertake the design of complete new locomotives or modifications to existing ones. Whether your requirements have been prepared by us or your in-house staff, we can produce a design specification and outline design which will meet your needs.

We use computer modelling extensively to determine the key parameters of the locomotive including the boiler, superheater, cylinders, valve gear and exhaust system. In-service predicted performance, including fuel and water consumption, can also be modelled and this integrated approach ensures that the design is developed in an optimal manner.

Once the design scheme is complete and approved, quotations for construction can be obtained. We are always happy to work with a client's preferred suppliers but we can also recommend appropriate contractors if required. Following on from the selection of contractors we will prepare a full drawing package for construction using either CAD or manual draughting as appropriate.

We would normally expect to work closely with manufacturers and contractors to ensure that construction is expedited and we can also offer a full construction management service to ensure successful completion of the project.

Another of our recent locomotive designs is 'Morag', a 2'-0" gauge 0-6-0T.
